What We Use to Protect You from Fraud

Shazam uses FICO® Falcone Fraud Manager {24/7) to help in the fight against debit card fraud.

HOW IT WORKS--Fraud detection and case management involve identifying transactions based on a predetermined set of parameters that appear to be suspicious and contacting cardholders to determine the validity of these transactions. The desired outcome is to more quickly identity fraudulent transactions and limit the impact on the credit union and our card holder.

If suspicious activity is detected, Shazam will contact you using the number on file with Trades and will ask you to verify transaction activity on your card. Your participation in responding to this call is critical to preventing potential risk and avoiding restrictions that may be put in place on your card. Having up to date contact numbers associated with your account is critical to us being able to properly protect your account.

What You Can Do to Help

  • Contact us with your most up-to-date contact information.
  • Notify us if you will be traveling and using your debit card.
  • Report a lost or stolen Debit Card at 800-383-8000.

Online Security - Things to Remember

  • Create secure passwords. Keep them private. Change them regularly.
  • Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols for a strong password.
  • Update your firewall, virus protection, and browser software regularly.
  • Use e-mail software with built-in spam filtering. Keep filters current. Don't open emails or attachment if you don't know the sender.
  • Deal with known, reputable vendors when doing online shopping.
  • Don't fall for internet scams. Remember the old saying "if it is too good to be true, it probably is".

Security for ATMs

  • Protect your Debit card and keep it in a safe place.
  • Do not store the magnetic strip on the back of you card against the magnetic strip of another card in your wallet.
  • If possible, avoid using an ATM during hours of darkness. If you must do so, try to have another person with you.
  • If an ATM must be used at night, try to use one in an area that is well lit.
  • When possible, try to choose an ATM that is highly visible.
  • Thoroughly observe the area around the ATM.
  • Be cautious of anyone who engages you in conversation as you approach the ATM, while you are using it or right after.
  • Be suspicious of anyone who closely observes you while you are using the ATM: Protect your PIN from view.
  • Never ask a stranger for help with an ATM transaction.
  • Don't count or needlessly expose cash at the ATM, spend as little time at the ATM as possible.
  • Take your receipt from the ATM.
  • Do not reveal your PIN to anyone.
  • When using a drive-up ATM, roll up car windows and lock the doors.
  • If your debit card is lost or stolen, immediately contact Trades & Labor.

How to Recognize a Phishing, Mishing, or Vishing Scam

  • Genuine banks, credit unions, and organizations will NOT contact you be e-mail to request confidential and personal information. If they send you a genuine request for some information, they would address you by your name and not refer you as "an account holder, customer, or member".
  • Take care to ensure that any e-mail or message they send to you does not contain typing errors and grammatical mistakes- many scammers make silly mistakes.

How to Respond to these Scams

  • If you receive an e-mail, phone call, or other message supposedly from a financial institution or another organization requesting your personal details, delete the message or hang up your phone.
  • Do not divulge your details to anyone until you have made some extra checks to satisfy yourself that it is not a scam.
  • Contact the organization yourself- but never use the number provided in the e-mail or message- a scammer will not give you the correct number!

How to Reduce the Damage If You Have Fallen for a Scam

  • Report the scam- You should call Trades & Labor or any other organization if you are suspicious of an email, letter, or phone call that claims to be from them. Or if you think someone may have access to your accounts. They can advise you on what to do next. Make sure the phone number you use is from the phone book or from your account statement.
  • Change your passwords- Scammers may have also gained access to your on line passwords.

Recommended Actions

Here are suggested actions recommended by the Federal Trade Commission and Equifax that you should take immediately if you suspect you are a victim of identity theft. Keep a detailed record with the content of your conversations and copies of all correspondence.

Call the Police

Report the crime to the police or sheriff's department that has jurisdiction in your case and request a police report. Though the authorities are often unable to assist you, a police report may be necessary to help convince creditors that someone else has opened an account in your name.

Contact the Federal Trade Commission

You can file a complaint with the FTC using the on line complaint form; or call the FTC's Identity Theft Hotline, toll-free: 1-877-IDTHEFT {1-877-438-4338) or write IDENTITY THEFT CLEARINGHOUSE, FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, 600 PENNSYLVANIA AVE, NW, WASHINGTON, DC 20580. The FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems itself, but your complaint may lead to law enforcement action.

Once you place the fraud alert in your file, you're entitled to order one free copy of your credit report from each of t he three consumer reporting companies, and, if you ask, only the last four digits of your Social Security number will appear on your credit reports. Once you get your credit reports, review them carefully. Look for inquires from companies you haven't contacted, accounts you didn't open, and debts on you accounts that you can't explain.

Close the Accounts That Have Been Tampered With
  • Close the account that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
  • Call and speak with someone in the security or fraud department of each company.
  • Follow up in writing and include copies (not originals) of supporting documents. It is important to notify credit card companies and banks in writing. Send your letters by certified mail, return receipt requested, so you can document what the company received and when. Keep a file of your correspondence and enclosures.
